Nesting Becomes Performance: Xtend Power on 20 mm PVC

In the CNC machining sector, the ability to perform precise, repeatable, and optimized nesting on complex materials is a key indicator of a machine tool’s real performance.

To evaluate its behavior in a real application context, the Xtend milling machine was employed in the machining of a 20-millimeter PVC sheet, fully milled in nesting mode to obtain different geometries within the same panel.

The test confirmed a stable, controlled, and consistently high-quality process—essential requirements for companies seeking production continuity, material efficiency, and the ability to integrate even complex CNC workflows.

Multi-Geometry Nesting and Operational Behavior

The machining involved dividing the PVC panel into multiple geometries of varying complexity, generated through CAM software and executed in a single cycle. This made it possible to assess not only the machine’s precision but also its ability to maintain geometric consistency, edge quality, and interpolation stability across different and closely positioned shapes.

Xtend has demonstrated how the machine’s mechanical structure and system kinematics allow full use of the working area, reducing material waste and ensuring consistent quality across the entire sheet.
These characteristics position the machine within a professional segment, suitable for production environments that require not only the milling of individual parts but real process optimization.

Power or Speed: Choosing the Right Electrospindle

The Xtend range offers two electrospindle configurations, designed to meet different operational requirements:

Xtend CNC Milling Machine
A moment of the CNC nesting process

– 8 kW – 36,000 rpm, ideal for high-speed machining and superior finishing quality, particularly suited for small-diameter tools and dynamic milling strategies.
– 14 kW – 24,000 rpm, designed for heavy material removal, deep passes, and the use of larger tools, ensuring rigidity, torque, and consistency even under high load.

In the test, the 14 kW electrospindle was used, ensuring consistent material removal throughout the entire cycle while maintaining the programmed feed rate without deflection or unwanted vibration. This configuration made it possible to achieve smooth surfaces, clean contours, and a uniform finish, confirming the machine’s suitability for demanding machining operations on high-thickness plastic materials.

ATC: Efficiency and Flexibility

A key element in the productivity of the Xtend is the presence of an automatic tool changer with up to 44 positions.
The availability of such a large tool magazine allows complex cycles and processes requiring highly diverse tools to be managed smoothly, without interruptions or manual intervention.
From an operational standpoint, this means reduced downtime, increased process continuity, and greater autonomy even during extended shifts.

The Nesting Process on Xtend: Chip Extraction

The integrated extraction system, with chip and dust discharge into an external box, kept the working area clean throughout the entire cycle.
Proper residue management improves milling quality, prevents interference with the tool, and reduces the risk of abnormal component wear.
This results in more stable machining, less maintenance, and increased machine longevity.

Mitsubishi Control and User-Friendly HMI

Xtend is equipped with a Mitsubishi control system, which provides precise interpolation, long-term reliability, and compatibility with major CAM software.
The operator interface, easy to manage even in multi-shift environments, reduces downtime and enables rapid integration of the machine into any production department.

This ensures a secure investment for companies: a widely adopted control system, easy to service, and readily usable by personnel already trained on Mitsubishi technologies.

Nesting on PVC and Beyond

Milling on PVC represents only one of the possible applications.
The configuration of the Xtend — from the structure to the installed components — is designed to offer a balance between power, stability, and operational simplicity, making the machine suitable for sectors such as:

  • Plastic Processing

  • Industrial Component Manufacturing

  • Advanced Prototyping

  • Multi-Material Machining

In addition to its technical value, Xtend is a CNC machine designed to reduce operating costs, maintain high quality over time, and provide a reliable working platform even during extended shifts.

Conclusions

The nesting machining of the 20 mm PVC sheet highlighted the ability of the Xtend to combine precision, process continuity, and material optimization. The combination of mechanical structure, technical features, and Mitsubishi control makes the machine a complete solution for production environments that require quality, reliability, and long-term consistency.

Xtend does not simply perform the machining operation: it elevates the entire process, transforming CNC milling into a concrete resource for improving industrial productivity and competitiveness.
